The East Asian Studies major combines a broad interdisciplinary grounding in the languages, cultures and societies of East Asia with a more in-depth focus on a particular issue or disciplinary research method in the areas of art history, history, literature, politics, sociology, or religion. With faculty from seven departments across the campus and courses from even more majors, East Asian Studies provides an interdisciplinary and transnational approach to studying the societies and cultures of China, Japan and Korea—and the region as a whole.

Overview: China, Japan, and Korea comprise a vital region that stands at the forefront of dynamic changes in global politics and the world economy. As American businesses expand to East Asian nations, and East Asian-based businesses expand to the United States, many employers see graduates with a solid background in East Asia as desirable prospective employees. This certificate program is designed to provide students with a broad interdisciplinary understanding of this vital region of the world. Special attention is given to the challenges of living in a global world.
The Department of East Asian Studies at Dickinson focuses on the study of China and Japan but attends increasingly to the broader regional and global contexts of these two civilizations. In our courses, students explore the region from multiple disciplinary perspectives: from ancient origins to contemporary realities through the study of history, society, politics, business and economics, literature and culture. East Asian studies majors study Japanese or Chinese through the end of their second year.
The minor is designed to prepare students for becoming leaders with specialized knowledge of the peoples, cultures, languages, and social systems of East Asia. It is also intended for heritage speakers of Chinese and Japanese, who wish to gain greater understanding of their identity, as well as for those who simply wish to acquire more knowledge about East Asia. The minor in East Asian Studies provides opportunities for students to develop in-depth knowledge about China and Japan from multiple disciplinary perspectives and prepares students for future life and work in the region.
At EAS, we believe that the first step towards gaining knowledge of the history, literature, philosophy, or film of any culture begins with a deep learning of languages. Our department offers hands-on language classes, survey courses on Korea, China, and Japan, and seminars about media, gender, religion, and more. Major, minor, honours, and joint honours concentrations in East Asian culture, language, and history.
